  • Step back in time to experience the raw power of jazz and blues. We celebrate the trailblazers who, amidst struggle, forged a sound of freedom. Their improvisational genius became a defiant voice, shaping the very foundation of urban culture.

• Soul & Funk: The Sound of Revolution (1960s-70s)

  • Feel the seismic shift of soul and funk. These genres, with their infectious rhythms and soulful melodies, ignited a youth revolution. Witness the artists who redefined expression and captivated a generation.

• Hip-Hop & R&B: Voices of Change (1980s-90s)

  • Experience the unapologetic energy of hip-hop and R&B. These groundbreaking genres, once controversial, became anthems of rebellion. Their enduring impact has reshaped pop culture, proving the power of artistic expression.

Margaret Bonds, a gifted composer and pianist, left a rich musical legacy and is known best for her collaborations with poet and friend, Langston Hughes. She was the first African American soloist to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and in this afternoon of songs, we celebrate some of her greatest compositions.
